If you’re an enthusiast scale car collector, you’ll know that Mattel-Hot Wheels was famous for being the only toy/model manufacturer to hold Ferrari’s license in producing Ferrari model cars. Towards the end of 2014, the two parted ways and Ferrari ended its contract with Mattel-Hot Wheels. Unfortunately, this meant that 3-inch Ferrari scale models by Hot Wheels are now discontinued.
Being an avid fan of both Ferrari as well as Hot Wheels, the hard reality was a bitter pill to swallow. The final two models produced for Prancing Horse were the Ferrari LaFerrari and the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. Yup, that means no Ferrari FXXK, no Ferrari 458 Speciale and Speciale Aperta, no Ferrari 488 GTB… you get the picture. This leads to me next Hot Wheels project – converting a stock Ferrari F12 Berlinetta into the limited production Ferrari F12tdf.
This was no easy task, and many hours were spent on extensive modification and fabrication work by using pla-plate to resculpt the front and rear into the likeliness of the F12tdf. I also decided to play it safe, by sticking with Ferrari’s choice of Giallo TriStrato, three shades of brilliant yellow, on the official launch car. Below is a simple mock-up before I proceeded with sorting out the minor details.
And voila! The finished result, and very likely the only Ferrari F12tdf in 1:64 scale you’ve seen so far. Have any ideas or comments to my customization projects? Let me know in the comments below!
